Merry Christmas

Greetings of the season from sunny South Carolina. This has been another good year for us as we continue to celebrate our sojourn on Hilton Head - we have now lived in our island home for more years than we have lived anywhere else. We began our life together here in 1978, remained until 1981 when we left for seminary, then returned to 4 Indigo in 2008 for retirement. We have been wonderfully happy here.

Proud Grandparents

As the picture above testifies, the big news for 2019 is the addition of two new Grandsons. On November 17, daughter Erin and husband Chris presented the world with identical twin boys, Davis Christopher Padgett (6lb, 14oz, 19") and Ryan Daniel Padgett (5lb, 8oz, 18.5"). Wow! Both boys are doing well and Mommy and Daddy are slowly but surely getting back to normal with the support and encouragement of big brother Noah (16 months). Chris continues to manage the Charlotte area operations of IDI, a large building insulation corporation. Erin will return to her job with Payzer, the start-up software firm in Charlotte, after her maternity leave. They live in Indian Land, South Carolina, near Charlotte in the home they bought at the beginning of their married life.

Padgett Boys

LD in Cadiz

Captain David Leininger is continuing his career as a US Air Force officer. He remains assigned to a base in central Spain where he is involved with a Leadership Training program for NATO pilots. He has taken advantage of his European sojourn to do a good bit of traveling (the photo is from a visit to Cadiz). We parents had the opportunity to join him in Spain in January (and we hope to do so again in the coming year) where we spent a few days together on the Costa del Sol then some time at his place in Albacete, the largest city in Spain that most Americans have never heard of. From David’s place, we flew to Greece for another week of playing tourist.

The Greece trip was wonderful, particularly for a history buff like David. This summer our wanderlust took us even farther afield - China. We had planned to go in 2018, but when Erin announced that Noah would appear right at the time of our excursion, we rescheduled. We saw all the major sites visiting Shanghai, Xian, a four-day cruise on the Yangtzee River, ending up in Beijing. We were incredibly impressed with what the nation has done in the quarter century since the end of the Cultural Revolution - it is a most modern nation. But, gracious, it is a long flight to get there!

As to other activities, Christie remains active in the music program at church singing in the choir and playing handbells. Her involvement with the Hilton Head Choral Society continues as well. David keeps on committing matrimony right and left. He officiated at almost 100 Wedding and Renewal of Vows ceremonies again this year with every indication that there will be no letup in 2020. People find him on the internet at He occasionally preaches at our home congregation of St. Andrew by the Sea as well as the non-denominational Chapel without Walls. At the request of his publisher he wrote another book, his seventh, a sermon series on the Gospel lessons for Advent, Christmas and Epiphany of Year B in the lectionary. The book is titled The 2,000-Year-Old Preacher: 21st century sermons on 1st century texts. It will be available this coming summer from CSS publishers (also, along with all the previous books, on our web site -

In last year's letter we told you that we were “cutting the cord.” We got rid of our cable TV service in favor of internet streaming. We also got rid of our landline telephones and went with just cellular service. That has worked out perfectly. The only problem such a move creates is that friends from wherever cannot just look us up in the phone book to make contact. To reach us going forward, put the following information in your contact list: Christie’s number is 814-730-0007; David’s is 814-730-0080.

Another wonderful year! We hope yours has been good. Our prayers are with you for a blessed Christmas and an equally blessed 2020.
